Once iOS 14 has been announced, Apple will also make available the iOS 14 beta download for all supported devices which will be listed below. Each of these devices will have it’s own iOS 14 built to be downloaded. There are 2 ways to install and download iOS 14 Beta, one of those being with a developer profile on your iPhone or iPad and the other will be using iTunes or Finder on your Mac. These 2 will start working after iOS 14 Beta will be released on June 22nd but you can read them now and inform yourself in order to be prepared for the release.

iOS 14 Supported Devices

The next devices are based on leaks and are is not the official list from Apple. This list will be updated accordingly during the WWDC on June 22nd. However, based on Apple’s pattern of supported devices, this list should be accurate.

  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone SE (2016)
  • iPhone 6S
  • iPhone 6S Plus

  • iPad Pro 11”/12.9” (4th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11”/12.9” (3rd generation)
  • iPad Pro 10.5”/12.9” (2nd generation)
  • iPad Pro 9.7”/12.9” (1st generation)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad Air (2nd generation)
  • iPad Mini (5th generation)
  • iPad Mini (4th generation)
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (5th generation)

  • iPod Touch (7th generation)

Leaks claim that all devices that run iOS 13 will receive the update to iOS 14. There are also expectations for the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, SE, and iPad Air 2 to be removed based on how Apple used to remove devices. However, due to great processors in these devices and not a great experience in iOS 13, Apple would probably update these devices to iOS 14. If anything is wrong with this list, it will be updated on the 22nd of June after WWDC.

Install iOS 14 Beta using a Developer Configuration Profile

This is relatively easy and only required you to download the iOS 14 profile. However, you will need a developer account that requires you to pay an annual $100 fee to Apple. The developer account will give you access to many tools, tutorials, and software for you to develop great applications. But the most important is giving you access to future releases of iOS. Before you start following the next steps make sure you made a backup using iCloud or iTunes.

ios software note

  1. In order to download iOS 14 beta profile, you will have to go to http://developer.apple.com/download/ using Safari on your iPhone.
  2. Log in into your account and scroll down until you see “Install Apple Beta Software” and click on it.
  3. On the new page, you can see the Overview description and under it, you can select which operating system you want to download.
  4. Click on iOS or anything else you need. (Note: iPads are running iOS even if the name they use is iPadOS)
  5. You will see an overview of the iOS Beta Software and look for “Installation Using the Configuration Profile”
  6. The first point on the list which says “download the configuration profile…” will have a download hyperlink which you will have to click. (Note: If you didn’t buy a developer membership that link will not work).
  7. Once you clicked that link, a pop-up will show on your phone for you to install the Apple Developer profile. Accept and install the pop-up which will open the settings for you.
  8. If the settings app was not automatically opened, do it manually.
  9. You should see a notification under your iCloud name and ID, click on it.
  10. If you don’t see the notification, go to General and scroll down until you see Profiles
  11. There you will have to approve the installation of the new profile. Click next on the top right.
  12. You will be prompted to add your password to confirm the installation is done by the owner. Add the password and continue.
  13. You will have to restart your phone for the Profile to be activated.
  14. Once your phone restarted, open Settings, General, and click on Software Update.
  15. You should see the latest version of iOS Beta made available by Apple. (Note: If you don’t see an update you were expecting, just wait, Apple doesn’t always release it at the same time for everyone)
  16. You can download and update to the beta version.

This is by far the most convenient way to get on a beta build. With this profile, you can update any iPhone to the latest iOS beta version (such as iOS 14 Beta). Depending on the Developer account setting you can give this profile to other people as well and they will be able to install the version. Otherwise, if other people want to install iOS 14 Beta they will have to wait for Apple to release the public beta profile. The public beta profile is released usually 2 weeks after the initial release and 1 week after each other beta.

Install iOS 14 Beta Software using a Restore Image

This is the best way to clean install any beta version of the iOS for iPhones and iPads. You will have to download an image from the Apple website using your developer account. If you don’t have a developer account you will need to purchase it by paying an annual fee of $100. After you have the image you will have to update or restore your iDevice with it. The next steps will go through the process but before make sure you made a backup using iCloud or iTunes.

ios image restore note

  1. In order to download iOS 14 Beta restore image, you will have to go to http://developer.apple.com/download/ on your Windows or Mac computer.
  5. You will see an overview of the iOS Beta Software and look for “Installation Using the Restore Image”
  6. The first point on the list which says “download the iOS beta software restore…” will have a download hyperlink which you will have to click. (Note: If you didn’t buy a developer membership that link will not work).
  7. Once clicked you will be taken to a new page where you will have to select which version of iOS you want to download. Select iOS 14 and the latest beta available at the time you read this. (Note: iOS 14 Beta 1 will be the first released version, and GM will be the final version which all users will download in September.)
  8. After you selected the version wait for it to download.
  9. Connect your iPhone to the computer using a data lighting cable.
  10. Open iTunes on Windows and Mac (macOS Mojave or lower) or Finder on macOS Catalina and select your iPhone from the sidebar.
  11. Wait for it to sync and make sure you are in the summary panel.
  12. Hold the Alt key on Windows or Options on Mac and click Update to update to the Beta version from your current iOS and keep all your files, or click Restore to have a clean install by deleting everything from your iDevice. (Note: If you choose to restore you can still apply the backup at the activation.)
  13. After you chose the file and opened it in iTunes the process will start straight away. It might take some time so be patient and do not unplug the phone or move it around! This is just to prevent a disconnection which might break the phone.
  14. After the update is complete and the screen on your iPhone or iPad shows the welcome screen, you can unplug the device from the computer.
  15. You are now on a beta version of iOS 14. You have to activate the phone and start using it. During activation, you can set the phone as new or use a backup if you chose to restore.

This is one of the cleanest ways to install iOS 14 Beta but it might not be the easiest. It is important to remember that beta software will come with bugs and therefore a clean version is recommended. This way you won’t create more bugs by making the iOS deal with old configuration files from your old iOS. As a developer, you can choose to give the .ipa file with the beta to other people in order for them to test the new beta software as well, however, it is not recommended.
